A Transition to Secondary at Tenby

Ruo Xuan

I recently interviewed Olivia from 7B, an outstanding student who was excited about her

transition from primary to secondary school at Tenby SEP. Olivia transitioned to secondary amid the devastating pandemic last year and started her Year 7 online as well. This was certainly not an easy process and it probably was filled with confusion and uncertainty. Despite that, she was filled with excitement in becoming a secondary student.

How did you find the transition process from primary to secondary?

On the 25th of August 2021, my transition to Secondary took place. It was an online process, soI think if it had been done physically back then, it would have been more interesting and

engaging.

Are you enjoying physical school in secondary so far?

Last week, I went from online schooling back to face-to-face. There is no comparison between online and physical learning! I really missed everyone and the excitement of seeing different teachers, so I am extremely happy to be back. I somehow feel a deeper connection with teachers and my fellow students - I am more excited about lessons now that I am at school physically.

How are you finding secondary school so far?

Being in secondary is exhilarating and, in my opinion, I feel like my friends and I have more

freedom walking to our own classrooms. But one minor problem with that freedom, is that we all get so tired after walking around the blocks to go to our different classrooms! However, the fact that I am at school with my friends and teachers physically makes it totally worth it!

What are the biggest differences between primary and secondary that stand out to you?

The classrooms in Secondary are much more spacious compared to primary and I love the fact that there are many more subjects like Drama, Computer Science, History and Geography. I enjoy all the subjects so much; I can’t even pick my favourite one! All the teachers are so

welcoming, and the lessons are definitely more interactive because it is more in-depth.

Secondary is quite different to Primary because the teachers treat me more like an adult with more responsibilities like getting to classes on time, and being able to speak my mind freely. Especially in classes like History, where different opinions on different spectrums of events need to be discussed.

Is there anything else you would like to add about your life as a secondary student?

Although life as a Secondary student is quite challenging at times due to the harder classes, this actually benefits me because I learn even more, at a faster rate, and with better consolidation at the end. It sure gives my brain a really good workout! It’s been really fun, and I’m looking forward to the rest of my time in Secondary!
