Future Skills Week!

Kysha

What an interesting week! Future skills and camp. Two contrasting yet similar activities. Personally, I enjoyed camp more but I still learned quite a lot during Future skills.

During Future Skills, I did:

  • House competitions where we were separated into our houses and collaborated on activities such as a scavenger hunt and working together to perform a dance. COLLABORATION

  • Making lactose intolerant pancakes due to my personal needs. We had a competition to see which group would make the most appetising and delicious pancakes using a pancake mix with the topping choices of fruits and chocolate chips. ADAPTABILITY

  • Acting out Roald Dahl characters to boost my self-confidence. We separated ourselves into groups and were given a Roald Dahl character to act out. We did a little exercise while reading out the script. SELF-CONFIDENCE

And this wasn’t all of it!

On the other hand, for camp I did:

  • GEMS Olympia where we would compete for our class in fishing, archery, mini golf and a giant puzzle. I definitely had the most fun with the giant puzzle even though it was really hard. My class surprisingly won first!

  • Survival Skills such as making a fire and building our own shelter. To see if our fire was good, we would have to cook a sausage and either leave it as it is or make it into a mouth-watering hotdog.

  • A wet and dry telematch where we would have to compete together with our class and do all sorts of activities wet and dry (hence the name). Some activities we did were transferring water from a sponge to the vase, transferring rubber bands using plates, and throwing the water balloon without it popping.

And more :)

Now, enough of my experience and let’s ask other students in Year 8!

Questions:

  1. What was your favourite activity in Future Skills and why?

  2. What was your favourite activity in Camp and why?

  3. Which activity did you learn the most from?

Aerin - 8T

  1. “Art meets Drama because it helped me build my self confidence and it was a lot of fun to do even if you are bad at drama. You can also express yourself through acting.”

  2. “I honestly really liked river trekking since I was able to get through the course easily and it was also fun.”

  3. “I think survival skills as I will most likely get lost in the wild but these activities helped me to survive and learn new skills.”

Yuan Lin 8E

  1. “My favourite activity during Future Skills week was Art meets Drama where we had to act out a scene using famous paintings. It was my favourite because it is 2 of my favourite subjects combined into one.”

  2. “During camp, my favourite activities were surprisingly Golf from GEMS Olympia and river trekking because among the eight 8E people in our group, there was a lot of class bonding and it was something that doesn’t happen in school all the time.”

  3. “I learnt the most from the ‘Batik and Survival skills because I have never did or learnt those things in my life, I have started a fire and painted a pre-made batik before but these activities taught me all the stages of making batik and how to build a shelter and fire with natural resources.”

Ellery 8T

  1. “House competitions as I could get my competitive side out!”

  2. “River trekking as it was refreshing and it felt good to get some exercise & it was extremely fun - I would definitely do it again!”

  3. “Probably survival skills - I learnt how to create sustainable shelter and fire to keep myself warm, and it also featured adaptability.”
