The Holi Festival, also known as the "Festival of Colours," is a Hindu festival celebrated in India, Nepal, and other countries all around the world. Being normally held in March, Holi celebrates the arrival of spring. The Indian community in Malaysia, much like the rest of the world also celebrates this diverse, inclusive festival.
The origins of Holi are murky but one story rooted in Hindu Mythology is exceptionally common. The story of Holika, a demon who was burned to death by Lord Vishnu. Holi is a festival that just like Diwali and other Hindu Festivals, celebrates the triumph of good over evil and is a time for forgiveness, rejuvenation, inclusion and most importantly fun.
The throwing of coloured powder and water at each other is the highlight of Holi. This practice, known as "playing Holi", represents the breaking down of social barriers and the bringing together of people. It is also a lot of fun! Participants smear brightly coloured powders on each other's faces, dance to music, and eat sweets and other treats.
In Malaysia, Holi is usually celebrated in temples or at community centers. It is a time for the Indian community to come together and celebrate their culture while also enjoying the joys of spring. Malaysians of all races and religions are welcome to attend the festivities.
Holi has grown in popularity in recent years and is now celebrated by people of all backgrounds all over the world. It is even celebrated as a "love festival" in some countries, with people confessing their feelings to their crushes and loved ones.
It is important to note, however, that the use of synthetic colours in Holi celebrations has raised concerns about the environment and health. Many people now opt for natural, eco-friendly colours made from flowers and herbs.
The Holi festival is a joyous and colourful celebration of spring and community. While it may have its roots in Hindu mythology, it has become a symbol of unity and friendship across cultures and borders. So let us embrace the Holi spirit, let's splash a little colour to the world! Just make sure to use eco-friendly colours and remember to have fun!
