International Women’s Day, on the 8th of March, is a day to celebrate and promote the role of women in society. For centuries, women have faced great injustice and discrimination. Thus, it is necessary to have a day to recognise the importance of women noted down in our calendars.
International Women’s Day was officially recognized by the UN in 1975. However, the first occurrence of such a day can be traced to a socialist party’s 1909 ‘National Women's Day’ celebration in America. From then on, the movement gained momentum throughout Europe, catapulting it to the world stage.
With all the history out of the way, we can talk about the present significance. Gender inequality is still an ever-present issue, despite our best efforts to squash this great injustice. However, as more and more women take their rightful places in society, the situation is starting to take a positive turn. But alas! This problem still lurks in various areas, such as in a working environment. If a woman can become a vice president, I don’t see why women should have to earn less than men.
There are numerous interpretations of how to celebrate this occasion. There is the demonstration aspect: marches and rallies and signs. Schools are also beginning to teach the importance of such a day to their students, through assemblies and special lessons. Thus, the idea of international women’s day is gaining greater exposure and appreciation.
Let’s have a short paragraph on a word I find very misleading at times: feminism. It is the promotion of GENDER EQUALITY. Some people imcorrectly believe that feminism aims to replace all men with women, which is completely ludicrous. This leads to all sorts of misconceptions that get molded into a monstrosity of nonsensical idiotism by the media.
With that out of the way, my little article ends here. With vast contributions to all major fields, women must be appreciated for the feats they have achieved. Have a nice International Women’s Day!
