Dear Diary,
This year’s Diwali celebration is coming quick, and I am so excited. As you probably know Diwali or Deepavali is a festival that is celebrated every year on the Hindu month of Kartika. It is a celebration to commemorate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, King Rama over Ravana and Lord Krishna over Narakasura. Diwali is a celebration like no other. It brings happiness, joy and prosperity into the lives of all who celebrate it. Diwali is not just a festival; it is a symbol of hope for humankind. It sparks global compassion, joy and prosperity, love, and the awareness of unity. I understand that I tell you this every single year, but it’s important that you remember.
Anyways Diary, as I have told you before, I visit my grandparents’ house every year for Diwali. It’s almost become our own family tradition and a fun one indeed. The celebration begins a few weeks before Diwali where the shopping starts. This must honestly be one of my favorite parts. We get to go out and buy new colorful traditional Indian clothes and just seeing all the different colors and choices to pick from makes deciding extremely hard. Also, do you think blue looks good on me Diary? I was hoping you’d give me some advice on what colour I should pick for my Kurta this year like how you do every year. You always know what I like so I need your opinion before I decide…
Exactly! You're probably right Diary, blue is definitely my colour and with a gold dhoti, I am going to look fantastic. You know me so well Diary, what would I do without you? Coming back to what I was saying, after we’re done shopping for all the beautiful-looking clothes we begin preparing for the celebration. Next the house decorations begin just a couple days before Diwali and there’s a lot to be done. We begin by hanging up Malais, making Rangolis and making all the scrumptious Indian traditional cookies (palagarams) like murukku, Gulab Jamun, laddu and the list goes on and on!
And then Diary, the best part of this tradition begins on Diwali day where I wake up, shower, and pray with my family. This is customary during Diwali as we need to honor the gods and our ancestors and ask for blessings from our elders.
After that, I am treated to a delicious traditional Indian breakfast complete with several helpings. The tosai with chicken curry is something I look forward every year. Then I put on my Kurta, (which as you said Diary, is indeed going to be blue this year) and my parents take me to my grandparent’s house where I help my mum and grandma prepare the Diwali lunch whilst sneaking a laddu or two out of the kitchen. Speaking of laddus, this year I have a stellar plan to sneak as many as I can. I'll tell you all about it later, Diary! A visit to our family and friends is also something I always look forward to because it's so much fun celebrating with our loved ones through songs and dance. Before we know it, it’s already dinner time and then it's time for us kids to have fun playing fireworks with family, friends, and neighbours.
However, this year Diary, my celebration is going to be a little different and even more special. My family is taking our Diwali celebration on holiday to Club Med Cherating and I am over the moon. We are leaving to Club Med on the second day of Diwali, and I really can’t wait to have so much fun celebrating Diwali at my favourite resort with my family. Don’t worry Diary, I will bring you along. Anyways, I got to go, will talk to you tomorrow. Bye and just in case someone is reading this, first stop reading my diary and second, Happy Diwali Nanba!
