A day in the life of a temporarily-disabled student

Purna

My average school day starts right about at 6am. I groggily make my way to the bathroom after what has to be 15 minutes of me trying to muster up the energy to pull myself off the tempting comforters and into the bath.

After that, I proceed to tell you how much of a lie that was.

In all truth, waking up at 6am and going to get ready shortly after, actually used to be an honest routine I used.

Right until I started waking up at 7am and arriving at school at the same time as my homeroom teacher, ready to take attendance.

And that was true too! Until the 3rd of June, when I fractured 3 of the bones in my foot. So rather than this write-up being about ‘A day in the life of a student’, perhaps it could be called ‘A day in the life of a temporarily-disabled student’.

From waking up at 6am and being the first student to arrive at class, to waking up at 7am and being the last to arrive at class, I’ve now gone to waking up right before my homeroom teacher starts the registration call at 7:35.

I’ve come a long way in terms of time management, still not late for my classes but 1 hour and 35 minutes extra of good ol’ rest.

Although my amazing sleep schedule is unfortunately not the chosen topic for this article, my routine is. As soon as I wake up, I set my laptop ready for the scheduled meeting and I hop my way over to the bathroom to brush my teeth and proceed to return back to my lovely learning area- Which happens to be a bed with 2 miniature tables next to it, littered with books from all areas of school subjects.

Then, that's the end of all action and productivity from my side. After the registration call, it’s mostly just silence and more silence coming from my bedroom.

The silence from education related factors only obviously, because you’re crazy if you think I don’t have music playing.

Due to my school not doing hybrid lessons anymore, my various teachers upload tasks and assignments for me to complete which I must upload and send to them after the end of each lesson… Some of the time, my teachers forget to upload the tasks but I’m totally fine with that!

My time at home, doing distance learning mostly includes me studying which is so entertaining and fun (This is totally me being honest and encouraging the school spirit!).

On the 23rd of June, I have a final science exam which consists of all the science subjects and topics all the way from year 7.

This is immensely helpful considering the fact that I missed half of year 7 due to me living in another country.

The last month has been filled with me going over and writing science notes, most independently referring to my coursebook as the very source of information.

Apart from science, I also have a math exam on the 28th of June which determines if I’m allowed to choose add math as a GCSE subject during my year 10 and 11 at school. So life is pretty fun with my broken foot and exam revisions.

Both being further reasons for my anticipation towards the summer holidays. I get my cast removed on the last day of school, which falls perfectly in time for me to learn how to walk again during the break.

Apart from writing notes for my science exam, I’ve been practicing my math by doing past year papers for math. I do the questions I know how to do only so I have a good exposure to exam-style questions which would be more beneficial to preparing for my upcoming exams as well as future exams.

And as much as I may dramatize about the work I have to do, I also started rereading a lot of my old books to kill time when I haven’t got the energy nor the motivation to continue. I only allow myself to watch movies on the weekend in order to make me look forward to those days or else weekends would become insignificant in comparison to my new online-learning lifestyle currently.

This has gone very far off-track but believe it or not, a temporarily-disabled student doesn’t have a lot of mindblowing events to share so my math and science revision is currently the highlight of the century in my mind! Dinner is at 7pm, and sleep is a mixture of as early as 9pm to sometime as late as 2am. Same old, same old.
