It was finally the month we have been waiting for, the month where everyone dresses up in traditional clothing in vibrant colours. Well, for those who don’t know, this month is known as….Chinese New Year!!
Chinese New year or the Spring festival, is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese Calendar. Each year has a different zodiac to celebrate Chinese New Year, this year is the year of the dragon, which means that mostly everything would be dragon themed such as the decorations, red packets and the Chinese New Year songs.
During this period, there would be many festivities going on such as performances like lion dances, and most families would be going to visit their relatives or friends' houses for prayers. There would also be many reunion dinners with a special dish called Yee Sang in which people would mix the dish using chopsticks while saying many auspicious Chinese words for good luck and prosperity. My family would always say many words to wish me the best of luck in my future white tossing the contents in the dish for dinner. Then right after dinner, I would go out to the park with my cousins to play with fireworks. If I am not with my cousins, I would sit by the window in my house watching people playing the fireworks instead. As a child, I just loved the feeling of being able to watch fireworks, it feels like an entire light show just brightening up your night.
The best part of Chinese New Year would be the food or the red packets we get which contain money inside. The red packet or also known as an Angpao, is a tradition where anyone who is married would have to give Angpao to the people who aren’t married. Besides the money, the food you get to eat during Chinese New Year is just spectacular. You get to eat many traditional foods you probably won’t get to eat during the rest of the year. That is all I have to say about Chinese New Year. I hope that everyone who celebrates this festival will enjoy it as much as I do!
