I Can't Sleep

Itsuki Ogawa

“I can’t sleep,” Chérie muttered.

It was now 2:59 in the morning and it was teeth-chattering cold. Her black cat, Nero, yawned into her face and sat up and stared at her face. “ NEED TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING, he seemed to say, FOLLOW ME.

“Oh? You need to show me something? Last time you said that you showed me a rat, a crow, and a pigeon you killed. What do you need to show me now? Ma petit chaton noir?” Nero made the most humanly replica of an annoyed face, his tail swishing from side to side distractedly.

Chérie stood up and wrapped herself in a fuzzy blanket and followed her cat out of the door, she silently shut the door and tip-toed down to the kitchen, where Nero patted his food bowl. He needed to have a midnight snack before doing anything. Sighing, Chérie filled a quarter of the bowl and placed it on the floor. Her cat stared at it, not touching it. Chérie, knowing her cat so much, sighed again and filled it up a bit more. Satisfied, Nero gobbled all the food and flicked his tail happily.

They went to the back yard where it was silent except for the sounds of crickets chirping and the blowing wind. Chérie shivered and thought how dark it was and were there any ghosts? She shuddered and stumbled after Nero who was confidently walking through the grass. After some time, Nero paused in front of an ivy infested door, it was rusty and was crumbling. Nero scraped the door showing that he wanted the door to be opened. Chérie was also curious regarding what was behind the door and leaned to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge! She heaved and then BAM it opened; well, it broke.

Nero hissed at her but strode into the dark leaving poor Chérie to stumble behind him. Spiderwebs hung around the corners and dust clogged the gaps of the little room. Chairs were littered all over the place and dead bugs were everywhere but in the middle of the room was a bundle of old rags and hay. Nero walked towards it and cautiously sat next to it as if the object was so delicate that any movement could shatter it. Chérie stood in front of the bundle and her feline friend beckoned her to slowly unwrap the secret object. She opened it, to find an egg. The egg was too big to be a chicken’s egg and it was also an aquamarine-colored egg and slightly translucent, enough to see what was inside. It looked like a lizard, with wings. When Chérie was inspecting it, it suddenly gave a crack and a tiny beak took its first breath and the little thing rolled out of its eggshell. Chérie and Nero had just seen the last dragon.
