It is finally the 31st of December. I woke up to the sound of wind from the open window in my hotel room. Mornings in Japan are always the calmest and the coldest. I spent the last few weeks of December in Japan in order to celebrate the last month of the year. My parents were still fast asleep, so I decided to secretly get dressed to go out and experience the snow while it was still snowing in the morning. As I stepped out of the hotel, I immediately understood how it felt like being in -10 degree temperatures. At this point, I'm not being dramatic. It was snowing so badly that my boots sunk into the snow-covered ground. Even though it was freezing, I still wanted to hang around in this snowy environment as it never snows where I’m from…
I quickly took out my phone to capture this moment for memories, then ran towards the hotel entrance before I froze to death. But being the clumsy me I am, I obviously did not see the ice on the path and slipped with a hard thud on the ground. Well it wasn't the first time this had happened to me already, so I hurriedly got up and went back into the hotel while being more careful. Then I went back to my hotel room, only to find my parents still sleeping on their bed. Like seriously, It's already 10am and they are still sleeping on the last day of the year? I harshly shook my parents awake as we have plans for today. We were planning to meet up with my parents' friends later in the day since they came to Japan with us for their vacation as well. Sooner or later, my parents woke up and we were heading towards a nice, fancy sushi restaurant for lunch.
We met my parents' friends at the restaurant, as well as their son, who was around the age of 16. I used to be close to him the last time we went for a family vacation together. But since the pandemic, I haven't seen him in years. Now, he had turned into a screen-addicted teenager who didn’t even communicate with his own parents when we met up in the restaurant. However, the food in the restaurant was amazing! I had never tasted sushi which was as fresh as this before. The fish on the sushi tasted so nice that it practically melted in my mouth. After lunch, we went to walk around Hokkaido to see what else there was to do for our remaining days in Japan.
Soon it was night, so we decided to go to a convenient store to buy food for the night because all of us were exhausted from walking around for the entire day. We ate as a family then stayed awake till it was midnight to watch the extravagant firework performance by the hotel.
