So, what is leadership?

Dwi Ariana

Leadership. The action of leading a group of people or an organisation. It can display itself in many different ways. It could be leading a project for school, being a captain for a football team, being a president, being a manager etc. Personally, I have had a fair share of leadership experience myself. My name is Dwi Ariana and I was a junior and senior house captain but I am now a prefect in the Wellbeing Committee, the Head Editor for the We At Tenby team as well as the Year 11 sports pillar leader.

My first time leading was taking on the role of junior house captain back in Year 6. It was my first time leading and so I was learning the basics that go into being a leader. Duties that you’d have when being a junior house captain may include counting merits from the students and announcing the winners during assembly every week. With my partner, I also had to attend the annual Sports Day, not only as a participant, but as a leader to motivate and take care of my fellow Falcons. After my one year trial of being a leader, I decided that I enjoyed being one and ran for senior house captain in Year 10. As expected, there was a huge jump from junior to senior house captain. It included more event planning and more interactions with the Falcons. We needed to constantly motivate the Falcons and also find new creative ways to keep their spirits high especially during tough times like during lockdowns. We achieved that by creating incentives like grab vouchers which they could still compete for online. The Falcons are a wonderful group of people who put their maximum effort into anything we do and it was exciting to lead them. However, there were some instances where we did not feel as encouraged to participate or struggled in certain events. Other than all the highs of leading, whether they are the victories or the amazing teamwork, I feel that the lows are the times where one's leadership skills really get put into action. When things don’t go as planned, I often confide in my partners or my teammates who would help take the weight off my shoulders. I am also quite open to any concerns I have to my team, so that they and I are on the same page. Being a leader may also take sacrifice. During Sports Day, the leaders and I had to participate in multiple events to raise our participant points even if it was only a few. Fast forward to a year later, I am now a prefect in the Well-Being Committee, leader for the Year 11 sports pillar as well as the head editor for the We At Tenby team.

My duties now as a prefect in the Well-Being Committee include event planning as well but now on a much larger scale. We need to be able to cater to the needs of the students in Tenby and ensure they are satisfied with the events planned. Even though in the Prefect Committee I do not hold a leadership position, the committee collectively still needs to have leadership qualities to be able to handle the many duties that go into being a prefect. Recently, I’ve taken on the role of head editor for the We At Tenby team alongside my partner Sean. Although this position has just begun, we already had a vast amount of work cut out for us. The preparation of a project is just as important as running the project itself. You may wonder. Why does one enjoy a leading position? In my opinion, leadership is a great way to test my teamwork skills and abilities outside of the classroom. I also like being able to put my ideas in place and turning them into reality, as well as being able to interact with a group of people rather than working by myself.
