I recently interviewed Lauren from 10T, an athlete who has always enjoyed playing sports and exercising in general. Naturally, the pandemic has been very difficult for athletes like her who enjoy outdoor activities. Although the COVID-19 restrictions are slowly relaxing, things are still far from normal. Today, she will share her thoughts and feelings on the upcoming sports day that will be held by Tenby SEP.
How did you keep yourself active during the MCO?
During the MCO, I went out on daily runs during the evenings. At first it was alright and I managed to run everyday but as the lockdown dragged on, it became incredibly difficult for me to stay motivated because there were absolutely no upcoming events for me to participate in and it felt as if my life was paused. However, I knew that when school opened again, I would want to play sports again with my friends so I was determined to exercise during the MCO. Besides jogging, I also played badminton around my house and practiced my volleyball skills by setting a volleyball to the wall.
Do you think COVID-19 will have a huge impact on sports day this year? How so?
COVID-19 has had a huge impact on everything so sports day certainly wouldn’t be an exception. I believe that hosting sports day online would be very difficult as it’s impossible to actually monitor students and this could lead to cheating and poor sportsmanship. Furthermore, I believe that if sports day was held online, there would be limited activities to do in your house and it would be very demotivating for students to jump up and down in front of a computer screen. Social encouragement is simply missing. But I admire all PE teachers who put in the effort everyday to encourage students to stay healthy and fit at home.
Which events would you participate in this year? Why?
If sports day is held online this year, I’ll try to participate in throwing events such as throwing a ball accurately into a box or bucket. If sports day is held physically this year, I would definitely participate in long distance running, especially the 800m and 400m run. I may even consider trying the 200m run as it has a partial sprinting element in it as well. I like running because I enjoy the exciting rush of adrenaline and the cool wind blowing on my face while I run.
Are you looking forward to sports day this year? Why?
If sports day is held physically this year, I’d be extremely excited and hyped for it, but if it was virtual it feels quite like another online lesson. I understand how dangerous it would be to host an actual sports day and the efforts all the teachers put into hosting an online sports day but a real sports day is truly something unique. We get to be competitive, win medals and eat with our friends. We get a chance to play for our house and just have fun with everything that we’re doing.
Compared to last year, what changes would you like to see in this year’s sports day?
In my opinion, I believe that it would be really interesting if they added specific or all the general sports such as badminton, volleyball, football and swimming. Although there are inter house competitions, I believe that if these sports competitions were held on sports day, it would be a much larger event with a much larger audience. Besides that, I think it would also be really cool if there were Milo or ice cream trucks.
Is there anything else you would like to add about this year’s sports day?
If sports day was held online this year, I still hope that many people will take part to engage in this event and stay fit. However, I really hope that this year’s sports day will be held physically because the attendance rate would definitely be higher physically. This year I would also really like to see Falcons win!
