BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! I woke up feeling grumpy about my sleep getting disrupted. Realising that I have to wake up, I swiftly placed my hand on my alarm clock and snoozed it. I wearily looked at my calendar, December 31st... Wait! December 31st? IT’S DECEMBER 31st! That means it’s New Year’s Eve! Hooray!
Oh! I forgot to introduce who I am. Hi! I’m Lacey, just an ordinary teenage girl who loves
listening to music and socialising with friends.
Anyways, back to the main point, I rush down the stairs and see my lovely mother preparing
breakfast: toast and scrambled eggs, with a side of orange juice.
“Mum, it’s New Year’s Eve!”
“Yup, I can see that Lacey. Now sit down and have breakfast, will you?” she replied while
making a cup of coffee for herself.
How can mum be so calm about this? It’s literally December 31st! DECEMBER 31st! Ignoring
her lack of enthusiasm, I sat down and started having my breakfast while listening to some
newly released pop songs.
“Lacey, I have a suggestion for your New Year’s Resolution,” mum says with a smile.
“Yup, I’m listening,” I didn’t look up and continued to play the next song while taking a sip of
orange juice.
“You should try taking a break from using your phone, especially for listening to music and
not listening to others when they speak.”
I spit out the orange juice that was in my mouth. “WHAT!” I hope I did not hear what I thought I heard.
“Lacey! I said that you should take a break from your phone. You really need it.” Mum said
while handing me a handkerchief.
“But what about socialising with my friends and you know you can’t take away music from me!
It’s my life!” I tried to change my mum’s mind.
“Nope! No is no. At least try it for one month, try it for me, please?”
I really despised the idea of having my phone taken away for one month, but I was not ready
to disappoint my mum.
Reluctantly, I replied “Fine...”
Mum smiled.
