The 8th of March is a joyous day that commemorates the importance of women and their achievements. This day aims to shed light on the abuse, injustice and inequality which they experience. On this momentous day, the colors purple, white and green are worn to represent justice, dignity and hope. Women deserve the same rights, respect and freedom given to men. We should not have to fight for our rights because of our gender. Behind every successful man is an even more strong and just as hardworking woman.

“A woman is like a teabag, you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water”

- Eleanor Roosevelt ( American Diplomat, Political Leader, Activist and First Lady of the United States from 1933 - 1945 )

An Inspirational Woman:

Many inspirational and incredibly successful women have lived and died on this earth for generations. However, due to inequality and social injustices, their actions have not been fully recognised. Ultimately Evelyn Hugo from the book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is the picture-perfect example of an inspirational woman.

This book explores the hardship and sacrifices women faced in the 50’s to rise to the top. Evelyn, a passionate actress, bravely discloses her journey. She reveals the brutal truth. The harsh, cruel and selfish reality of the film industry torn apart by men. “As a woman, being wanted meant having to satisfy,” she says.

Evelyn was raised to be respectful and was told that she was “a girl who should always follow a man’s orders”, but one day she discovered that her strong will and passion beamed brighter than her fears.

She taught me that it is never okay to let yourself stop before you even start trying. Her strong will and determination made me realize that there are women just like her who speak on behalf of the silenced and prove that we have a voice and rights. Not just as women but as humans.

Despite her being only a fictional character, she is still able to convey such a powerful and relevant message. She is able to teach us that Power is a gift provided to everyone, but how and when you use it significantly changes its purpose. This is Evelyn Hugo. A phenomenal, inspiring woman.
