The Importance of Mother's Day

Theja

The night before mothers day, I stayed up perfecting my gift. Grabbing any decorative item to embellish and improve it. It surely paid off because the next day I handed the gift to my mother and she loved it! Immediately grabbing her phone to take pictures and showing them off to her friends.

I wondered as to why my mother loved my gift so much? Was it the variety of colours or the fact that I surprised her? If I was to celebrate mothers day I would want to have a huge party with gifts and entertainment... but my mother didn't ask for any of that.

She stays at home and helps us any way she can, whether it's maths homework, an art project or just listening to our rants. I love my mother with my whole heart despite our occasional arguments. As mothers they give us almost every piece of knowledge they have and help us build ourselves up to go out into the big world. They sacrifice a great deal of themselves just to raise us. I'm not sure about others but I surely don't think about this enough and barely do special things for my mother, like giving gifts or surprising her because I'm so engrossed in my own life.

I now realise why she was so excited. It wasn't because of the gift or the trip. It was because I thought about her. I put in the effort to give her a gift because I loved her and wanted her to know that I do. That's why she loved it so much.

As I was writing this I realised that I underappreciated all the things she does for us. That's part of why I think we should celebrate mothers day, to recognise all the trouble and pain mothers go through and acknowledge it. Since there are so many ways mothers contribute to our lives, it definitely shouldn't be boiled down to just a day. Seeing that it is though, we should make them feel the most special way!
