Valentine's Day: Love it or leave it?

Jaishivan

Ah, Valentine's Day. The one day of the year when we celebrate love in all its forms. Whether you're single, in a relationship, or it's complicated, you can't escape the buzz surrounding February 14th. And while some people are all heart-eyes emoji about this day, others are more like the Grinch in our Christmas Pantomime.

So, what's the deal with Valentine's Day? Well, there are a few theories about the origin of this day. Some say it dates back to ancient Rome, where a festival called Lupercalia was celebrated in mid-February to honour the god of fertility, Lupercus. Others believe it's a Christian holiday named after Saint Valentine, a martyred priest who became a symbol of love and devotion. But regardless of its origins, Valentine's Day has become a global phenomenon, with couples and loved ones exchanging gifts, flowers, and cards to show their affection.

Then comes the question of "What do people like about Valentine's Day?" For starters, it's a great excuse to express love and appreciation to the people you care about. Whether it's your significant other, best friend, or pet, Valentine's Day is a perfect opportunity to shower them with love. And let's not forget about the romantic gestures. Nothing beats a box of chocolates, a bouquet of roses, or a heartfelt Valentine's Day letter (all for sale and available for pre-order on the Student Welfare Committee Instagram).

But, of course, there are also some downsides to this holiday. For starters, it can be pretty expensive. Between the chocolates, the flowers, and the presents, it's easy to go overboard in price. And for those who are ‘single’, Valentine's Day can be a bit of a bummer. It's like a giant, public reminder that sometimes you're alone.

Another point of contention for some people is the commercialization of Valentine's Day. Every year, retailers and advertisers try to cash in on a special day, bombarding us with cheesy commercials, overpriced bouquets, and heart-shaped everything. It's like they're trying to convince us that love can be bought and sold. And while it's true that gifts can be a nice gesture, some argue that true love should be about more than just material possessions.

And Judge now what is your verdict? Is Valentine's Day a holiday to be celebrated or dreaded? Well, like all things in life, it's a mixed bag of hearts and doves impaled by arrows. On one hand, it’s a wonderful opportunity to express love and appreciation to the people you care about. While on the other hand, it can be a bit of a burden, with the pressure to buy gifts, the commercialization of the holiday, and the reminder that you’re alone.

At the end of the day, it's up to you to decide how you feel about Valentine's Day. Some people love it, some people hate it, and some people fall somewhere in between. Whether you're a hopeless romantic or a Valentine's Day Grinch, just remember that love is a many-splendored thing, and it's important to celebrate it in your own way. So, whether you're sharing a box of chocolates with your crush or watching a romantic comedy with your cat, have a happy and love-filled Valentine's Day!
