The chattering noises downstairs woke me up immediately, phones ringing and the lagging Wi-Fi that was making the voice from the phone glitching and annoying, I probably can guess that my parents are calling my relatives and saying Chinese New Year greetings to them. I decided to wake up as I needed to help my parents to prepare for tonight’s Chinese New Year reunion dinner. It was too noisy for me to continue my sleep, so I went to my wardrobe and grabbed some clothing to wear. I wore it and went downstairs to start preparing for tonight’s Chinese New Year reunion dinner.
My mom told me that my cousins, uncles, aunts and my other relatives were coming over to our house tonight to celebrate Chinese New Year reunion dinner, but they were also here to see the fireworks because in my area they put a lot of fireworks, when I say a lot, I mean like a lot, they said the would also bring and prepare a lot of food and snacks.
By the time we had our breakfast at our nearest kopitiam, it was time that we started to buy some food and ingredients for tonight, not all were traditional food though. We bought fish, Chinese pork roast, duck, oysters, my least favourite sea cucumber, abalone, a box of sesame balls with lotus paste and red bean paste, and some snacks like nangga chips, pineapple tart and almond cookies. We also bought some ingredients so we can prepare other delicacies ourselves at home.
It was 2:00 p.m. and we barely had enough time to prepare. I quickly helped my mom to prepare the ingredients to make the gluttonous rice and the turnip cake while she was preparing steamed fish. She then took out the duck and roasted it with spices.
And now the most important part of the meal is the Yee Sang. We made it into the shape of a dragon because it’s the year of the dragon this year. I quickly went and took a shower and changed into my red Chinese new year clothes that my parents bought from me while we were shopping at the shopping mall.
Just as I went downstairs after changing my clothes, my relatives and my cousins had arrived and they brought some food and snacks for us to enjoy. We laid out all the food on the table and we were ready for the Yee Sang.
We used our chopsticks to do the Lou Sang and said some blessings in Chinese to bring good fortune and luck.
We then ate steamed fish, abalone, Chinese pork roast, roasted duck, oysters, turnip cake and gluttonous rice. It was such a delicious meal!
We cleaned up as quickly as possible so that we could watch the fireworks on time. We all were well prepared knowing where the fireworks would be released as we also brought some snacks to eat while waiting for the fireworks.
The clock struck 12:00 a.m. as the fireworks began to fill up the sky with bright and colourful sparks, bringing us to a better and fortunate year of the dragon.
